Tax Schemes

Over a month has passed since the tax man pocketed his cut of your earnings, and the manifold ways in which our government wastes your money proceeds apace. However, one of the most egregious manipulations of a lobbyist-written, incomprehensible, ever-expanding tax code  has recently been revealed by Indianapolis station WTHR-TV. It pertains to the abuse of the Additional Child Tax Credit, a provision in the code intended for filers who can’t claim the non-refundable child tax credit because in doing so they would exceed their total tax liability.

It turns out that illegal aliens are using their Individual Taxpayer Identification Numbers (ITINs) in order to claim as child dependents other illegal aliens they are living or working with, or in some cases, may not have have even met! As Arnold Ahlert explains in a compelling piece for FrontPageMag, this fraud is being facilitated by Spanish-language tax preparation services, which wouldn’t exist in a country with a more sensible immigration policy.

Regardless, there are members of Congress who are attempting to rectify this problem through legislation that targets illegal alien scammers who seek to exploit American taxpayers. As we told you last year, Representative Jack Kingston has introduced a bill-still in committee-entitled the Child Tax Credit Integrity Preservation Act, which would clarify who is legitimately able to claim this child tax credit and would (hopefully) prevent tax filers from claiming those who are not eligible for the credit on their tax forms. I urge anyone who has the opportunity to contact their congressperson and urge him or her to support this necessary bill.
