Those of you who were hoping for more media exposure on my part are in luck! Two days from now you’ll see me on Tiempo, an Hispanic public affairs program hosted by WABC-TV news anchor and reporter Joe Torres, discussing the President’s most recent executive action regarding immigration. I’ll be debating a representative of Catholic Charities, whom I’m sure you’re all familiar with by now, and a spokeswoman for Neighbors Link.
Those of you living in New York City can watch the program on Channel 7 at 11:30 AM this Sunday, but for those of you living outside of the Big Apple I will be posting a link to the entire show once it’s made available. For the record, I misidentified the United Farm Workers as the United Fruit Workers at one point during the debate. Unfortunately, this is television and gaffes have been known to occur. Other than that, I think you will all enjoy listening to the other side of the story for a change.

I have seen you on “TIEMPO”,and I must say…while you seem very knowledgeable about politics & the law,you seem a bit nervous & fidgety on the air! You have to have an air of calm when doing an interview,people pick up on that! Also,I disagree with you on President Obama’s approach to dealing with the immigration policies…because he gave these Republicans years to work with him on many plans,including immigration & they have stonewalled every effort he has made to make peace with them! So,now,he’s playing hardball!
And,I must say,I can’t blame him!
I’m sorry to break this to you, but that’s not how our system of government works. As I explained on air, the Constitution expressly delegates powers to Congress regarding making “a uniform rule of Naturalization,” not the President. And what Obama did, by his own admission, was to make immigration law. The fact that Congress “didn’t act” on his legislative preference was itself an action. When Congress does not enact a bill it means that the bill is dead, not that the chief executive has the authority to implement the underlying elements of the bill through administrative fiat.

I caught the discussion panel on TIEMPO. I thought Joe Torres was a good moderator. The two ladies tried to appeal to people’s emotions as to why this amnesty was needed although they couldn’t give a good answer when you said that legally the amnesty needed to come from Congress. You made two very goods points: 1) Giving this blanket amnesty would clog up the system to delay the processing of legal immigrants who applied by waiting their turn the legal way and 2)Now legal immigrants and even current American citizens are competing with illegal immigrants for jobs that are all too scarce already. Nice display of historical knowledge on this topic too.
