More details about the presumed identity of the suspect in yesterday’s shootings in Parliament Hill are slowly trickling in. Notwithstanding the absurdist headline, I would recommend reading national security reporter Colin Freeze’s account in The Globe and Mail. As The Daily Telegraph points out, the inspiration for the latest wave of jihadist attacks draws from a well much deeper than Canada’s military entanglements abroad, notwithstanding the armchair theorizing of Islamic apologists like Glenn Greenwald. As demonstrated yet again by yesterday’s horrific events, the zealotry of the Islamic convert, like the ummah itself, knows no fixed geographic boundaries.
