Let Our Children Be Dreamers Too

Donald Trump speaking at CPAC in Washington D.C. on February 10, 2011. Author: Gage Skidmore

Tonight we heard one of the best lines of this presidential campaign. Gratefully borrowed for the heading of this post, it reflects the stark difference between the campaign of Donald Trump and that of his rival. While the former emphasizes the needs and concerns of those who’ve invested in this country-their homeland-for their entire lives, the latter exalts the lives of those whose first act on American soil was violating our laws. Who comprises “our children”? Are they EVERY CHILD in the United States? Somehow the inflection of The Donald seems to me that he is reflecting back on “the children” who were his peers in his youth (his was not the most inclusive according to all the pictures of him and his rich, Caucasian crew). Can’t help but wonder if he refers to ALL children or only “his” picture of children, from birth through college and into already prepared-for-them employment? Shall I TRUST that he means ALL our children? Doubt it!

    “Who comprises “our children?’”

Presumably, he’s referring to American children. Not middle-aged child rapists from Mexico.
