There’s a great book by John Barry about that outbreak, which actually killed more people than any other pandemic in recorded history.

The explosions happened on April 28, on 30th the rumors were widespread and radio stations abroad (in Poland, Sweden, Germany) all were screaming in alarm – but Soviet Kiev authorities issued bulletins claiming nothing happened that might be harmful for public health and ordered people to attend May-1st “demonstration” – with hundreds of thousands, including children, walking the streets covered in radioactive dust.
