In an update to a story we’ve been covering recently, the House of Delegates has approved a bill that would give discounted, in-state tuition rates to illegal aliens applying to colleges and universities in the state of Maryland. Although deeply discouraging, this news is not surprising considering the electoral support politicians-specifically, Democrats-are seeking from the Hispanic community.Whether actions like pandering to illegal aliens will generate sustained support for Democratic politicians is open to debate.
What can’t be debated though is the fact that this bill-should it be signed into law, which increasingly looks likely-will not do anything but disenfranchise more Maryland college students whose families abided by the law. Furthermore, the requirement that male recipients register with the Selective Service is beyond misleading. The state of Maryland has no authority to compel young men in this country illegally to register with the Selective Service system, much less offer them the benefits of American citizenship that this clause implies. This was merely a parlor game designed to paper over the fact that Maryland’s legislators have decided to give the figurative middle finger to American students from their own state.
William Houston, who’s kept tabs on what various states are doing to unravel our federal immigration system, offers his own views on this bit of kabuki theater over at Youth for Western Civilization. I highly suggest you read his take on this latest legislative outrage.
