Arizona Comes To Florida

Despite the fact that its chief provision has largely been enjoined by federal judge Susan Bolton, SB 1070 seems to have taken hold of the public’s imagination, as this news from the state of Florida illlustrates.

Actually, the proposed law seems to have incoporated elements from previous Arizona laws-which have been upheld-that punished smuggling and employment of illegal aliens, so the comparisons to SB 1070 are a bit imprecise. However, the fact that the state’s attorney general and leading candidate for governor, Bill McCollum, has embraced this bill is evidence that, despite the fears of some, the country continues to move towards greater border and immigration enforcement.
